Francophone Education

A statistical snapshot
PDF Print E-mail

The Canadian Francophonie comprises all the francophone communities across the country, including the million Canadians outside Quebec who have French as a mother tongue.

I've compiled the following data using the same approach as I did in Fusion, which recognizes that individuals can have more than one mother tongue. The numbers don't always add up because those people will appear in more than one category.

This statistical divergence shows that the Canadian whole (and that of each province and territory) is greater, more complex and richer than the sum of its linguistic parts, thanks to the growing presence of citizens who have more than one first language.

Children outside Quebec who grow up in a two-language household and attend a francophone school are riding the crest of this wave, because they're ideally positioned to become the most bilingual citizens of Canada.

The following numbers come from Statistics Canada censuses.

A statistical look at the Canadian Francophonie

The Canadian Francophonie is the sum, so to speak (this being about numbers), of all the francophone communities around the country. Of course, most francophones live in Quebec, but there are also a million Canadians living in the other provinces and territories who have French as a mother tongue.

In Fusion[GT1] , I did a breakdown of the 2001 statistics to identify how many Canadian residents outside Quebec had French as a mother tongue. I also promised to include the figures from the 2006 census on my website… Fortunately (for my peace of mind), I didn’t say exactly when that would be! It took much longer than expected, but here at last are the promised stats.

First, though, a word about the figures you’ll find below. I’ve used the same approach as I did in Fusion, which recognizes that people can have more than one mother tongue. Statistics Canada has acknowledged this reality for years now, as have experts in the linguistics field. So in order to have a complete picture of the Canadian Francophonie, I’m including everyone who has French as a mother tongue.

One last thing: school boards and other organizations sometimes compile stats in order to get a more precise idea of their target populations. If you’ve got access to such figures as well as permission to publish them, be sure to visit our Forum [GT2] and share your information (including links) and insights. That way, we can all get to know the Canadian Francophonie a little better!
